Overcoming Barriers to Healthcare for the Transgender Community

The health challenges facing the transgender population are some of the steepest and most difficult for any population subset in the United States today. Across the board, a transgender person is at greater risk than the national average for drug and alcohol abuse, depression and anxiety, sexually transmitted diseases, cancer, and heart disease. Compounding the problem are the community’s significant barriers to regular healthcare and gaps in coverage.

Why I Joined Healthify and How You Can Too

My education was saturated in the social sciences. I studied Sociology as an undergraduate student focusing primarily on identity systems (gender, race, sexuality). At the end of my studies, I had come to the conclusion that the world is filled with social structures that provide both very important purposes as well as very damaging effects on the world. Instead of pursuing a research position, which is the usual course of action for a Sociology graduate, I wanted to do something practical in helping solve some of the numerous social problems we face. I decided to go to school to be a social worker.

A Letter to Social Work in 2016

2015 is coming to an end. For me it has been a year of big changes. Earlier this year I decided to leave a community clinic that meant a lot to me. The biggest reason for leaving was my dissatisfaction with the way case management operates at a systemic level. I've previously written about how antiquated case management systems are ("Social Work and Tech") so I won't belabor the point. For my last post this year, however, I want to share the other side of that story: the excitement I feel around a new way to address the social needs of our patients.

One of my favorite things about working at a tech startup is I get to do a lot of different projects — projects that directly support social workers like me. My primary job is managing Healthify's resource database. I make sure we offer a rich and diverse amount of community service data for underserved populations whose needs, in all my years of social work, are often the most overlooked by traditional providers of resource information.

Sharing Economy in the QTBLG Community

Queers all over the place are dynamic communities that reinvent ways of living. Varying gender and sexual identities tends to be the number one thought that comes to mind when people outside the community think of us. Our diversity of identity is fantastic but so is our diversity of economy. This post is about the queer sharing economy.

Social Work and Tech

Technology in healthcare leaves a lot to be desired, a desire held by both patient and provider. Providers utilize numerous electronic medical record systems with onerous user interfaces that slow down the clinical work flow. This sometimes results in less-than-stellar coordinated patient care.
